Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine sends letter to President Biden with special request

Columbus, Ohio – Governor Mike DeWine has voiced opposition to a bill that would make part of the Ohio National Guard a permanent part of the U.S. Space Force. He has asked President Joe Biden to reconsider the proposal.

The U.S. Air Force presented Legislative Proposal 480 to Congress in March. It aims to bring units of the U.S. National Guard, including those from Ohio, under the control of the U.S. Space Force. This would allow the U.S. Secretary of the Air Force to either move these soldiers or disband their units. Governor DeWine has shared his concerns about this plan in a letter to President Biden, stating that it would go against the purpose of the Militia Act of 1903 and bypass the powers of state governors.

“As Commander in Chief of the Ohio National Guard, I retain the responsibility for these military organizations and their missions,” Governor DeWine emphasized. “Usurping this power would be unprecedented, and I respectfully ask that you do not do so. Every Ohio National Guard member takes an oath not only to the United States of America, but to Ohio as well. I honor their dual commitment by ensuring that all Ohio National Guard members can serve in the communities where they live, work, and raise their families. When called, they stand ready to deploy – anytime, anywhere.”

Governor DeWine, while supportive of the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Space Force’s goals, suggested that the federal government should consider other ways to use the Ohio National Guard to support these aims. He highlighted the necessity of allowing the Guard to continue serving locally while remaining ready for national duties as needed.
