Northwest Local School District announces facility consolidation and new construction plan

Published on

Cincinnati, Ohio – The Northwest Local School District has released a complete master facility plan that will see the consolidation of several schools and the construction of four new buildings. This is a big step toward updating its buildings and modernizing the infrastructure. After being passed by the school board on Monday, this significant plan is now waiting for the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission to decide if it will get state money.

Merging Colerain and Northwest high schools into one central high school

The district, which serves a diverse student body, want to improve their school system by joining Colerain and Northwest high schools into one central high school. This new school will be built where Colerain High School is currently located, which will give students from both communities a more unified and beneficial place to learn.

As part of the plan, a new Colerain Elementary and Preschool will be built at the Houston Early Learning site. A new Colerain Middle School will be built where the current elementary school is, and a new Pleasant Run Middle School will be built where Northwest High School is currently located. A major goal is to make learning spaces that are more efficient and up-to-date so that they can meet the needs of all the kids in the district.

In his speech, Superintendent Darrell Yater talked about the plan’s two benefits: the better learning chances for students and the expected cost savings in building upkeep. Yater told parents and teachers that the new buildings would follow the district’s rules for how classes are structured and that the standard teacher-to-student ratios would be maintained.

As of now, the district doesn’t know when this plan will be put into action because they are still waiting to hear about state funds. The total cost of the project has not been made public. District officials have said that the financial details will be discussed once the state’s backing is known. The district might ask local voters for money through a bond issue to cover any costs that are left over.

Northwest Local School District lowering the number of education building in recent years

Northwest has been reducing the number of buildings it uses. In 2018, children from five elementary schools were moved into three new buildings as part of this new project.

Northwest Local School District Superintendent says the merger would be beneficial for everyone involved in the process

Superintendent Darrell Yater mentioned that merging the two existing high schools into a single new facility would enhance educational prospects. Presently, Northwest High School hosts all the career technical courses. By consolidating the schools, Colerain students will no longer need to travel to another high school to access these programs.

“By bringing everything under one roof, the students would have all those courses and opportunities they’re looking for,” he said.

To collect feedback on the plans for consolidation, the district sent out surveys by contacting parents, posting QR codes at sporting events, paying for ads in all five of Colerain’s zip codes, among other measures. The Enquirer has requested survey results.
